Science and religion should go hand in hand

We would like to create a framework here, where thinking together we can redefine our faith and believes which can serve as a common belief for the whole mankind. The result must be in harmony with today’s scientific results and with religions. It is not easy because scientists are sometimes very dogmatic in the denial of the values of religions. A good example of it is Richard Dawkins’ book, “The God Delusion” (Bantam Press; 2006). About the dogmas of religions is not even worth talking about. So, although we think that the science and the religions should walk hand in hand, it will be a long run to make them to do so.

There were periods in the history of mankind when science and religion were not separated. The holy books consisted everything that people knew about the world in that age including hygienic rules (nutrition health) and laws (jurisprudence).

Paul Gauguin: Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?
A new enlightenment is necessary to make science and religions go hand in hand.
Paul Gauguin: D’où venons-nous ? Que sommes-nous ? Où allons-nous ?
(Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?)

On our way to make cooperate and even merge science and religion it is useful to study ethology and especially human ethology through which we can see better that “Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?”. These questions are the titles of certain chapters of the book “The Social Conquest of Earth” written by Edward O. Wilson. Wilson, the Pulitzer prized biologist and naturalist calls this process which connects the humanities with natural science as “new enlightenment”.

The roots of humanities – music, literature, fine arts – are in the religion as well as the roots of science. In the golden era of a religion the arts support the religion to spread its ideology and the main sponsor of the arts is the organization of the religion: the church. The science was sponsored as well by the church. Nowadays people are afraid of such kind of cooperation because during the centuries we got used to that the church and religion are rigid and dogmatic however it is not a must. It depends on the stage of that religion: where is the church in its lifecycle.

We believe that a well-managed church can renew itself and build into its tenets the results of science. A good sign of it that the Roman Catholic Church under Papa Francesco nowadays considers the evolution as a scientific fact.

And we believe that the scientists can see the community building role of the church as it provides the community with believes, actions and rites. Every of them is necessary for forming a human community. Scientist should also admit the limitations of human cognition.

In that way there is a chance for science and religions to go hand in hand and provide with an integration role the mankind.
